On Thursday, December 21, the University of the Peloponnese welcomed a delegation from the former Weifang Medical University of China at its facilities in Kalamata for the launch of the process of creating an international university partnership in the field of health sciences.

The University of China, with which the University of Peloponnese already had an established cooperation, was recently upgraded in early December by the State of China and renamed Shandong Second Medical University (SSMU). The increased responsibilities of the Chinese University are combined with broader opportunities for deeper synergies.

In this context, the head of the delegation and President of Shandong Second Medical University, Yingjun Guan, issued a call for the establishment of an international partnership in the field of health sciences, aiming at synergy in education and research as well as exchanges of students, faculty and expertise. On the Greek side, the Rector of the University of Peloponnese, Professor Athanasios Katsis, gladly accepted the invitation and expressed his wish for even closer and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Apart from the customary exchange of gifts, the SSMU delegation had the opportunity to attend the degree awarding ceremony and tour the two campuses of the University of Peloponnese in Kalamata. They particularly appreciated the faculty laboratories and teaching facilities and were impressed by the quality of the food that Greek students enjoy on a daily basis.

In the immediate future, the international partnership that has now been agreed in broad terms will be further specified and the implementation of the relevant actions will begin.
