The Institute for the Research of Byzantine Culture is located in Mystras, Laconia. It was founded in 2007 within the University of Peloponnese and, in particular, the School of Humanities and Cultural Studies. The aim of the Institute is:

1.    To conduct research in the whole spectrum of Byzantine Culture: Archaeology, Art, History, Philology, Philosophy, Law, Science, and Popular Tradition during the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine periods. Particular emphasis is placed on the study of the Peloponnese, particularly the region of Laconia.
2.    To promote research at an international level and cooperation with relevant institutions in Greece and abroad.
3.    To organize seminars and workshops on Byzantine Culture.
4.    To be a centre for the education of postgraduate students of the above mentioned Departments of the University of Peloponnese and other similar Departments of universities in Greece and abroad. The Institute may also be used for part or all of the doctoral thesis of doctoral candidates.
