History - Location of the department
The Department of Accounting and Finance was founded as part of the School of Management of the University of the Peloponnese through Law No 4610/2019 (Government Gazette A’ 70/07-05-2019). It is located in Kalamata.
In an ever intensively globalised and competitive academic environment, the Department of Accounting and Finance off ers to its students a state-of-the-art educational environment by adopting all scientifi c and educational developments that emerge globally. The Undergraduate Curriculum in Accounting and Finance has begun operating since October 2019.
At the Department, there are two Postgraduate Curricula operating, which have an extraordinary, constantly increasing dynamic, and are particularly popular inside and outside of the local community, as it can be seen through the signifi cant number or applications it receives annually.
Moreover, the Department designs third-cycle studies for the preparation of doctoral theses.
The Department’s staff consists of eleven (11) Teaching and Research Staff members (DEP), and in particular of professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers with a rich scientific, teaching-research and administrative work.
In the staff of the Department, there are also Laboratory Teaching Staff members (EDIP), who teach, as well as Administrative Staff members.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies
The Department realises a state-of-the-art, coherent and functional Undergraduate Curriculum. It was designed in such a way, so that it can cover any current scientifi c development in the study fields treated by the Department, and also meet the constantly developing needs of the entities. In particular, the Undergraduate Curriculum has taken into account its two components (Accounting – Finance) and aims to promote knowledge in the broader fi elds of study of Accounting and Financial Sciences.
In detail, the courses cover fi elds of study, such as Accounting, Financial Management and Analysis, Statistics-Mathematics, Contemporary Developments in Money and Capital Markets, Law, Economic Principles, Informatics. Each course lasts 3 hours per week during the 13 weeks of each semester. The courses are divided into Compulsory (C) and Elective, and are allocated within the 8 semesters of studies. Courses of the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th semester of the curriculum are held during the winter academic semester, while courses of the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th semester of the curriculum are held during the summer academic semester.
The Undergraduate Curriculum and the study material have a certain structure, the purpose of which is to meet the professional needs of the administrative, accounting and fi nancial sector of the economy. The graduates of the Department of Accounting and Finance acquire the necessary specialised knowledge, skills and abilities required by the most state-of-the-art trends in the scientifi c fi elds of Accounting, Finance and Management Analysis.
Every academic semester includes courses which off er 30 ECTS-credits in total, while in order to gain the degree, 240 ECTS-credits are required in total, according to the standards applying for the fi rst-cycle curricula with a duration of four years within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).
The courses off er 6 ECTS-credits each.
Since the academic year 2019-2020, the Department of Accounting and Finance of the University of the Peloponnese has been organising and operating the following Postgraduate Curriculum: “Executive MBA in Financial Planning” (Government Gazette of Establishment 3372/Β’/31-8-2019 and Government Gazette of Studies Regulation 3271/Β’/8-10-2019).
The subject of this Postgraduate Curriculum is to provide tertiary education graduates with specialised postgraduate-level knowledge in the fi elds of Management and Business Financial Planning. In particular, the aim of this programme is to meet the needs of the labour market through promoting knowledge and developing the appropriate abilities and skills on business organising, management and operation in the private and public sector, as well as to provide specialised knowledge about the optimal fi nancial strategy of each company unit, from the search of funding until the creation of a complete and applicable fi nancial programming.
Postgraduate Studies "Master of Science (M.Sc) in Accounting and Finance"
Since the academic year 2019-2020, the Department of Accounting and Finance of the University of the Peloponnese has been organising and operating the following Postgraduate Curriculum: “Master of Science (M.Sc) in Accounting and Finance” (Government Gazette of Establishment 3372/Β’/31-8-2019 and Government Gazette of Studies Regulation 3695/Β’/4-10-2019).
The subject of this Postgraduate Curriculum is to further promote knowledge, develop research, meet educational, research, social, cultural and development needs of Greece, as well as the high-level specialisation in the fi elds of Accounting and Finance. The aims of the programme are the following:
(a) to provide graduates with the necessary knowledge, so that they can understand any developments in the fi elds of international Finance and Accounting, (b) to provide graduates with knowledge, so that they can evaluate, choose and use the appropriate fi nancial tools for optimal decision-making, (c) to comprehend and evaluate the operation of fi nancial markets and products, (d) to create and develop opportunities for graduates, so that they can apply optimal practices which will create value at a corporate level.
The courses of each Postgraduate Curriculum off er thirty ECTS-credits in total per study semester. The thesis also off ers thirty (30) ECTS-credits. Postgraduate students have to accumulate ninety (90) ECTS-credits in total.
Carrer Prospects
The Department’s graduates will be equipped with all required skills, in order to work, among others, as:
▶ (a) professional accountants, tax consultants, economists, investment advisors, business advisors, public administrative executives or executives in the private and broader fi nancial sector,
▶ (b) statutory auditors-accountants, internal auditors, corporate members in multinational auditing fi rms and companies of other sectors.
▶ (c) executives in educational and research centres, who will promote research and teaching in the study fi elds of Accounting, Auditing, Finance and Banking.
Research
The Department’s Laboratory, founded in 2021, meets any educational and research needs in the study fi eld of Finance, Data Analysis and Accounting. Its aim is the development of cooperations and cooperation protocols between the Department and broader public sector institutions or private sector institutions, in favour of the development of innovations and original research outcomes.
The research activity of the Department is constantly advancing; this fact is demonstrated by the number of publications and citations of the Department’s Teaching and Research Staff members (DEP). Moreover, the Teaching and Research Staff members (DEP) are very active in scientifi c writing and also participating in international conferences in Greece and abroad.
