History - Location of the department
The Department of Economics at the University of the Peloponnese was founded in 2003 and awards its graduates with a Degree in Economics. Since 2013, the department belongs to the School of Economics, Management and Informatics, which was later renamed into School of Economics and Technology in 2019.
The Department of Economics is located in Tripoli.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies
The Department of Economics off ers a modern and competitive curriculum according to international standards and international developments in Economics. The programme off ers knowledge and skills on modern economic analysis to students through basic courses, such as acroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics. Moreover, through a fl exible course structure, it provides students with a wide range of elective courses, so that they can deepen their knowledge and acquire specialised knowledge on cutting-edge fields.
Starting from the third year of studies, the courses are separated into the following three specialisations:
▶ Specialisation 1: Economic Policy and Development
▶ Specialisation 2: Finance and Investments
▶ Specialisation 3: Business and Market Economics
Through the Internship Programme, the Department of Economics also off ers to students the opportunity to work for three (3) months in a position related to their subject of study. Through the Internship Programme, students can work temporarily in businesses, organisations and banks of the
public or private sector, in order to prepare more properly for their transition to the labour market.
In detail, the aims of the current curriculum are:
▶ to provide a curriculum on economic analysis and its applications, which will inspire and guide its students,
▶ to develop the students’ skills on expressing complex arguments, analysing practical issues, critical thinking, quantitative techniques, mathematical abilities and successful communication, by using a variety of educational processes,
▶ to provide students with important knowledge and skills for their development into capable professionals,
▶ to make students develop an economic way of thinking not only in economic, but also in social, political etc. issues,
▶ to offer a great variety of courses to students, which will provide them with a wide knowledge of economics,
▶ to fuel the interests and academic needs of each and every
The curriculum meets the standards of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).
In February 2014, the external evaluation of the Department of Economics by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education came to the conclusion that the Department fully complies with the quality regulations (http://es.uop.gr/images/fi nal-report-dept-economics.pdf). Moreover, in December 2020,
the evaluation of the Undergraduate Curriculum of the Department of Economics was conducted by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education. The evaluation was about all fi elds of academic activity, such as the quality of the courses, the educational process, the professors and generally all services off ered by the Department to its students. The Department earned an excellent evaluation.
The Department off ers 2 postgraduate and 1 doctora curriculum. Since the academic year 2006-2007, the department has been off ering the Postgraduate Curriculum “Public Management” (https://mapm.uop.gr) and since 2018-2019, the department has been off ering the Postgraduate Curriculum “Economics, Defence and Security” (http://eds.uop.gr)
The Doctoral Studies of the Department (https://es.uop.gr/phd/index.php/el/) are organised and operate respectively according to the applied institutional framework. The Doctoral Thesis is an original contribution to the fi eld of Economics, to which the subject of the research belongs. It must have the scientifi c validity of scientifi c journals, so that they can be published in acclaimed scientific peer-reviewed journals. It has to be original, in order to become an added contribution to the research discipline.
Career Prospects
Graduates from all three Study Cycles of the Department have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities stipulated in the National Qualifi cations Framework and can apply the economic theory in any economic decision-making field.
The structure of the Undergraduate Curriculum focuses on providing the necessary skills for the professional career of the Department’s graduates.
The Undergraduate Curriculum provides the participants with plenty of practical and theoretical knowledge, but mainly it helps them develop a strong and solid way of economic thinking, which is used for any kind of problems they will face in their work environment. The Department’s graduates
have a strong background, based on which they can develop professionally in either the public or the private sector. They are capable of managing work/research plans, taking responsibility for the decision-making and any problem that arises, as well as of taking over administrative tasks in their field of expertise. They have advanced knowledge on the fi elds of economics and management science, which allows them to comprehend and critically analyse theories and phenomena referring to policy design and practice, not only at a national level, but also within the framework of the European Union and international organisations.
In parallel, the Department off ers to its graduates the motivation and the background for further education at a postgraduate or doctoral level, so that they can acquire highly specialised research and innovation skills, as well as the ability of using new knowledge.
Studying at the Department of Economics lays the foundations for a successful career in big international and Greek organisations, businesses, research centres, banks and fi nancial institutions in Greece and abroad, as well as for an academic career not only in Greek but also in foreign Universities.
The Curriculum is regularly reformed aiming not only to adjust the content of the studies to the modern requirements about practising Economics, but also to boost the capability of the Department’s graduates to analyse and manage complex economic phenomena.
According to surveys conducted by the Department, 75% of the graduates work in the fi eld and 59% of those fi nd a job position in less than 6 months aſt er their graduation.
Research
Teaching and Research Staff members (DEP) as well as Special Laboratory Teaching Staff members (EEDIP) have great experience in competing for and realising research projects funded by national and community resources, while at the same time they publish their research in international
