History - Location of the department
The Department of Nursing of the University of the Peloponnese was founded through Law No 3391/2005 (Government Gazette 240/4-10-2005) and has been operating since the academic year 2005-2006 in the historical place of Sparti. Through Law No 4610/2019 (Government Gazette A’ 70/07-05-2019), the Department of Nursing is part of the School of Health Sciences and is located in the city of Tripoli. It has been operating since the academic year 2019-2020. The Department of Nursing organises and off ers modern studies in the fi eld of Nursing, complying with a wider range of contemporary scientifi c, professional and social requirements.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies
The curriculum focuses on the provision of the required knowledge in the specialisations of Nursing, as well as the developments of certain skills and behaviours. According to the instructions of the WHO and the EU, the curriculum covers the following axes:

▶ 2. Health promotion, prevention, guidance and teaching
▶ 3. Decision-making
▶ 4. Communication and team work
▶ 5. Research, development and leadership
▶ 6. Nursing care
Included are: 38 compulsory courses and ten (10) compulsory elective courses. The total number of ECTS-credits is: 249 (240 are required for the acquisition of the degree).
Aſter completing their studies, the graduates of the Department of Nursing:
▶ will have a complete body of knowledge, which will include elements of all scientifi c areas of Nursing about the promotion and protection of quality of life in health and illness, i.e. in holistic and anthropocentric health care (prevention, therapy, rehabilitation) for healthy and sick people, family, groups and community.
▶ are able to deepen and broaden their knowledge in nursing practice based not only on classifi cation systems of nursing diagnoses, but also on Nursing theories and Documented Nursing Practice.
▶ have advanced knowledge in the fi eld of Nursing, which allows them to cooperative eff ectively with other health professionals, in order to protect and defend healthy persons and patients.
▶ have the skills which allow them to solve problems in their specialised fi eld of studies.
▶ can manage project / research plans by being responsible for decision-making and any problems arising.
▶ can undertake management tasks in their specialised fi eld and deal with situations either individually or in cooperation with colleagues.
▶ have the ability to teach, supervise and evaluate younger colleagues of theirs within the framework of professional practice.
From the academic year 2009-2010 until 2018-2019, the Postgraduate Curriculum operated (second-cycle studies) and off ered a postgraduate specialisation degree (master’s level) in “Health Services Management and Crisis Management” to more than 300 students in the following two specialisations: (a) “Emergency Care” and (b) “Health Services Organisation and Management”. As of the new academic year, new Postgraduate Programmes are getting prepared. The Department was certified with grade “excellent” (10/10) by the Hellenic Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency in all evaluation aspects.

Graduates of the Department of Nursing at the University of the Peloponnese can acquire job positions in the Greek National Health System, in the education sector, broader public sector entities (Greek Public Companies and Organizations, banks et al.) and the private sector, for which the degree in Nursing is an obligation defi ned by law.
The degree of the Department of Nursing of the University of the Peloponnese leads to professional practice as a nurse, a profession established by law, which is described as “general care nurse” according to EU Directives 2005/36/EC and 2013/55/EC.

The Department has produced and publishes a plethora of papers in international and Greek peer-reviewed journals, which have been acknowledged through a signifi cant number of citations. The Department’s Teaching and Research Staff members (DEP) have played an important role with their presence in international and Greek conferences, and as members of European and international committees, while they have also received eleven (11) international awards and honours.
