History - Location of the department

 

The Department of Philology is part of the School of Humanities and Cultural Studies. It was founded in the academic year 2003-2004 and began operating in 2005-2006. It is located in Kalamata and housed in the buildings of the former 9th Infantry Regiment at the Kalamata Old Camp, which were converted into modern teaching and administration spaces, and equipped with the necessary technical and logistical infrastructure for their adequate and safe operation.

 

Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies

 

The Curriculum of the Department of Philology, which was certifi ed with grade “excellent” by the Hellenic Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency, covers the whole range of Greek literature. It off ers three thematic cycles (Classical Philology, Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology, Linguistics) and combines traditional disciplines of Ancient Greek Philology, Latin Philology, Byzantine Philology,Modern Greek Philology, Linguistics, Palaeography, Papyrology, Philosophy and History with new specialisations, such as Theory of Literature, Comparative Literature, Folk Studies, World Literature, Pedagogy, Special Teaching of Literary Subjects with Computer, Soſt ware Applications in Philology Research, and Special Education and Training; this is an advantage for the Department in comparison to other departments of Philology in Greece. Through its Curriculum, the Department of Philology (240 ECTS) aims to promote scientifi c knowledge and offer higher level education in the aforementioned disciplines according to international standards. In parallel, it provides graduates with the necessary pedagogical skills, which allow them to share the acquired knowledge adequately and effectively.

The Department of Philology also off ers the following Postgraduate Curricula: a. “Ancient and Modern Greek Literature” (with two specialisations) and b. “Byzantine world: Its relationship with Antiquity and the Newer Hellenism”. Aim of these Programmes of Postgraduate Studies (90 ECTS) is to delve deeper into Ancient Greek Philology, Byzantine Philology, Modern Greek Philology, Comparative Literature and Theory of Literature. In the aforementioned Postgraduate Curricula, the teaching staff consists mainly of professors and the rest teaching staff members of the Department of Philology, and is supported by respected professors and experts in the broader fi elds of Philology, aiming to provide students with further specialisation and excellent philological formation of postgraduate students.
 

Career Prospects  

 

The graduates of the Department of Philology have recognised professional rights and, through the multifaceted education they receive during their studies, they can work in Secondary Education or be appointed in the category “University Education PE02” in the public sector, as well as in the private sector. Graduates can actually work as text editors and proofreaders for the periodical and online Press, but also in cultural institutions. Because of the great importance of the Pedagogical and Didactic Competence of our teaching  staff , the Department provides for free (with additional consideration of transitional provisions for the years 2015-2021) a Certifi cate of Pedagogical and Didactic Competence as from the academic year 2021-2022 (No 32/07-06-2021 Senate’s decision). The Programme leading to the acquisition of such a Certifi cate includes theoretical education and attending/teaching in Secondary Education schools (high schools of general, technical, art and special education), thus combining the acquisition of educational knowledge with the cultivation of teaching skills, and aims to the understanding of educational theories and practices, In conclusion, it is worth noting that the Certifi cate of Pedagogical and Didactic Competence off ers direct access to every kind of educational institutions of the public and private sector, in Greece and Europe.

The degree of the Department of Philology gives graduates the opportunity to enrol in a Postgraduate Curriculum in Humanities and Cultural Studies.

 

Research

 

The Department of Philology has three established research laboratories (a. Ancient Rhetoric and Drama, b. Diachronic Study of Greek Language and Literature and c. Comparative Literature and Theory), which promote the academic and research work of the Department through their activities. The laboratories organise international conferences and one-day conferences, making use of their contacts with university departments and research centres in Greece and abroad. They also offer open training seminars to scientists and teaching staff. Moreover, the Research Institute of Byzantine Culture, which is located in Mystras, operates within the framework of the School of Humanities and Cultural Studies.

The Department of Philology accepts applications from post-doctoral candidates for all Philology fields. The applications are submitted at the Assembly of the Department in consultation with the supervising professor and include a detailed CV, a research draſt and a research timeline. At the moment, fi ve post-doctoral research projects are being conducted in the fi elds of Ancient Greek Philology, Latin Philology and Modern Greek Philology. Post-doctoral researchers can also offer assisting teaching work to the Department’s Curriculum.
