Dr Efstratios Emm. Tzirtzilakis is Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of the Peloponnese, Greece, and a University Council Member. He served as Vice-Rector for Finance and Electronic Governance at the University of the Peloponnese from 2 February 2023 to 31 August 2026 and as Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2019 to 2021.
He holds a degree in Mathematics (1997), an MSc in Applied Mathematics (1999), and a PhD in Biomagnetic Fluid Dynamics (2003), all awarded by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Patras..
His research centres on computational fluid dynamics and applied mathematics, with particular expertise in biomagnetic fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics and ferrohydrodynamics. His work combines mathematical modelling, analytical techniques and numerical methods—including finite-difference, finite-volume and finite-element formulations—to investigate electrically (non) conducting magnetic fluids. Applications include blood flow in aneurysms and stenoses, targeted magnetic drug delivery, boundary-layer and internal flows, heat and mass transfer, micropolar fluids and open-channel hydraulics. His recent research extends these areas to three-dimensional fluid–structure interaction, haemodynamic and geometric indicators in aortic aneurysms, the development and application of numerical methods and interpretable machine-learning models for fluid-flow and haemodynamic prediction. He also led the University of the Peloponnese team in SAFE AORTA, a Greece 2.0 NextGenerationEU project developing an AI-based clinical decision-support system for abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Professor Tzirtzilakis has authored or co-authored more than 92 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, attracting over 2,500 citations from other researchers. He has been repeatedly included in the Ioannidis science-wide databases of standardized citation indicators, ranking among the top 2% of researchers in his subfields. Two of his early contributions to biomagnetic fluid dynamics were selected for republication in the Virtual Journal of Biological Physics Research. He has served on the editorial boards of Mathematics, Mathematical Problems in Engineering and Scientific Reports is a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews of the American Mathematical Society, as well as for more than 60 international journals. He has delivered invited lectures at several universities, including the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. He has also received postgraduate and postdoctoral scholarships from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation.
