As a member of EUNICE European University Alliance, the University of the Peloponnese participated in the XIX Palio d’ Ateneo Games, organised by another member of the alliance: University of Catania. The event took place on 8, 9 and 10 May 2024 in Catania, Italy.

Traditionally held at a local level, this year’s edition of the games acquired an international dimension, initiating the participation of five EUNICE members in the first EUNICE Palio. Each university was represented by a male and a female student, who competed in both, team and individual sports, gaining points for their universities.

On the first day of the event, students paraded around the city centre and competed in limbo. The sport activities of the second day, which was dedicated to beach sports, were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. On the third and final day of the games, the students competed in the 100m and the 2x25m sack race relay.

Poznan University of Technology (Poland) gathered the most points and was announced as the winner of EUNICE Palio.

Student participation in international sporting events, such as Palio d’ Ateneo, is an important means of enhancing not only students’ physical well-being, but also their personal development. In addition, it contributes to socialisation, promotion of cultural awareness and development of essential skills such as teamwork, leadership and intercultural communication.
